What a reel is, and what you get
A reel is a short vertical video with its own audio track, posted to a separate surface inside Instagram and stored the way an ordinary feed video is stored. What comes back is one progressive MP4. Instagram publishes a DASH manifest beside it for adaptive playback in the browser, and it lists the same progressive file three times under different internal type numbers, so a reels download here shows a single row rather than three copies of one thing. That row carries the byte size, the pixel dimensions and the duration, each read from the file rather than estimated.
Reel dimensions are worth knowing before you save. Creators upload at 1080 × 1920, and Instagram commonly serves the progressive copy at 480 × 854, which is the encode its own web player uses. The figure shown on the download row is measured from the file's track header, so it is the size that will land on your disk.

Where the Instagram reels downloader stops
Stories are out. Instagram's anonymous story endpoints return an empty body rather than an error, and the only way past that is a logged-in session, which VideoCatch never holds. A /stories/ link is rejected before a request leaves the server, so the answer is immediate and the reason is stated.
Private accounts, follower-only reels and deleted posts are unreachable for the same reason. Asking for your Instagram password is the one thing this tool will never do.
Instagram also expires its media links quickly. VideoCatch caches a post's metadata for one hour, and the download link inside it is signed by Instagram against its own shorter clock, so a link left sitting in a tab may need a fresh lookup. Pasting the reel link again costs a second.
Music licensing sits between you and the rights holder. A reel's audio may be a commercial track Instagram licensed for playback on Instagram, and saving a copy does not extend that licence to a re-upload anywhere else. Keeping a reel to watch offline or to quote in commentary is a different act from reposting it as your own.
Saving reels on iPhone, Android and desktop
Reels are tall, and every gallery app handles a 9:16 file the same as any other MP4. What differs is how each browser treats the download itself:
- iPhone and iPadTap Download. Safari opens the reel in its player instead of saving it, which is iOS behaviour rather than a fault. Tap the Share button at the bottom, then Save Video, and the reel appears in Photos alongside your camera roll.
- AndroidTap Download. Chrome writes the file to the Downloads folder and shows a notification; Move to or Share from there puts it into Gallery. If Chrome opens the reel in a tab, long-press the video and choose Download video.
- DesktopClick Download and the file saves. If your browser plays it in a new tab instead, right-click the Download link and choose Save link as. Instagram's filenames are long hashes, so rename the reel while you are saving it or you will not find it later.
